Marcus Harvey Myra Hindley

Another artist that i have done research on to do with hand/finger painting, is Marcus Harvey in 1995 he created one of the most iconic yet the most disgusted painting in all off britian.

Myra Hindley was the notorious lover and accomplice of Ian Brady the serial torturer and killer of children in the mid 1960’s. The pair were known as the Moors Murderes because they buried their victims bodies on Saddleworth Moor in Yorkshire,

When Harvey’s his 11ft by 9ft work was hung from september 8th till december 28th 1997 in the Sensation exhibition of young british artists at the royal academy of art in London, because of the work that he has created he got a lot of cynical exploitation levelled against him and the work its self got vandalised by many people.

Below is a picture of the paintinf itself

To create this painting Harvey used a full frontal photograph of Myra ,that was taken by the police in the 1960’s that has been reproduced in the mass media many times over, after he had enlarged the image to the humongous size, then went in with black, white and grey acrylic paint to create the painting using a child’s open palm print but he used a plaster cast of the hand not the real hand itself and got to work creating this huge portrait of the criminal.

From doing research i found wanted to construct Hindleys painting using the hand prints from the group of which her victims where selected, to show that the painting reiterates the idea that she is inexorably marked by her crimes and that she can never erase the traces of her and Brady’s victims and that their hands reach out from their graves in reaproach and accusation.

Artist Research Iris Scott

Recently over the past few months i have been things about painting my work with my hands and fingers, instead off using brushes so i decided to look at some artists who have created artwork using their hands/fingers for inspiration.

One of the artists that i have looked is an artist called Iris Scott, who creates big beautiful work using her fingers the amazing thing about her work, is that when you first look at her paintings you wouldnt think they have been painted using fingers look like they have been created using brushes.

Below is some off her work that she created

Before she started painting with her fingers she use to paint her work with brushes like most artist do but after a while she decided to try using her fingers and have never picked up a brush since “I am not here because I went to the right art school. I am here because the art I make resonates with the child in every human being—our inherent instincts about beauty— and this resonance is amplified by the democratizing power of the Internet.” A quote from iris which is empowering and beautiful. Alot of the work she creates is off animals, landscapes and plants which she makes look even more beautiful than it already looks.

Critic review no.2

This crit that we had was mainly talking about how we are going to set up our studio spaces and were we are going to place our art work for the final show

For my studio space i decided that on both my walls i would place my two 4ft by 4ft canvas’s of my daughters one of them on one wall and one of them on the other wall then i have two smaller canvas’s which i will place one on each wall aswell these are the photos i will be placing on my canvas’s that will go in my studio space but they will not only look like the images below but they will also have my daughters hand prints in the background and i will also be painting these with my hands and fingers

While talking to everyone in the class everyones ideas we brilliant for how they were going to lay out their art work for the final show one imparticular i liked the most even though everyone knew what they were going to do with their art work this person imparticular had planned it out and drawn up sketches in her book

Laing art gallery vist

On thursday 21st february me and my daughters visited the laing art gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne town centre to see if I could get any inspiration for my artwork.

There some beautiful pieces of artwork and sculpters at the gallery and it was a wonderful day out for me and the girls. These three paintings are beautiful watercolours, there where so many amazing water colour paintings but I personally found these three stood out to me and were my favourites.

This had to me my favourite sculpture out of all the sculptures in the gallery I think mainly because you could actually touch this one and feel all the rough and smooth parts and all the other bits and bobs on the sculpture its interesting because its about all the things you would find at the bottom of the sea but when you first look at this sculpture you wouldnt think its things you would find at the bottom of the sea but it is still beautiful

These last 15 paintings are some beautiful oil paintings around laing art gallery which I thought were very interesting some more than others but all of them were beautiful in their own way and the very last image is a a very large sheet of material with if I remeber oil paints on it but this gallery was a very good experience all in all.

Tynemouth exhibition set up

The set up for the tynemouth bridge exhabition was new experience for me and I think alot of the other students aswell I have never up an art exhabition before.

It was a long set up that lasted from 9.30am till about 3-3.30pm we had these very big boards “shown in image below”, that we had to place along the middle of the bridge in a zig zag patter then put them together zip ties and very large screws and bolts. Then after all the boards had been put up and secured, we then had to drill all of the canvas’s on to the boards in a certain order and hand the rest of the work up with the little name tags underneath all of the work, which was quite stressful because we only had the one drill to go round everybody, that made it a bit stressfull because alot of us were panaking that we werent going to get are work up in the space of time we had but thankfully we managed to get it all up and arranged nicely.

Print making and visiting sunderland university

On the 21st of january we took a trip to Sunderland University to do a work shop on print making, which was an amazing and fun experience the week before we had to digitaly create a stencil to use for this work shop and take with us to use.

Before creating the final prints we had to practice using the print making machine by creating a plane print, which was very interesting to use but was also very fun the image below was the practice print of just a plain red A4 square.

After creating the practice print the technician showed us how to use the machine to make mark making on a print, before we do are final stencils we used all sorts of different coloured paints to create the marks in the print we used spatulars, paint brushes, plastic forks and all sorts of others things that you could potentially use to create marks and effects in paint, we also used oil pastels to create lines and we could draw shapes on the print before adding the paint we even used talcum powder on the paper which stopped the paint touching parts of the paper, which creates these little white dots on the paper that all most looks like a snow effect as shown in the image below.

After alot of practice using the print machine and using different techniques, we were ready to do are final prints using the stencils we had pre prepared .The four images below are the prints that I created using the stencil that I had created using Adobe Photoshop which was also a new experience for me.

After doing the print making we got to have a look around the art studios were the students at Sunderland created their work. This was a lovely experience for use to have as we could get inspiration from the students work, on things we may be able to do with our work and get new ideas though not copying the work these students had created there was alot of beautiful work there that the students had created.

These are some photos I have taken of the work at Sunderland University.

Tynemouth bridge exhibition

This is my painting from tynemouth bridge exhabtion which was an amazing experience for to do the painting that I decided to do. This painting is very close to my heart as is and experience I have been through and wanted to show people that it isnt a nice one to go through.

The painting its self as shown in this image above is a young girl between the ages of 15-18 no real age in the image, who is pregnant and crying that young girl is suppose to represent me, as I fell pregnant at the age of 16 I wanted to show the baby/babies inside the stomach to show that doesnt matter how many babies you fall pregnant with weather it be one or multiple babies, the things that get said and the opinion’s that people give can still effect the person they are saying them too.

The smaller canvas are not so nice opinions coming in to this person from the outside which is making this young girl upset and having mixed feelings about the choice that she is making.

The message that I was trying to show people with this painting is that no matter the opinion, you have to give to someone sometimes it is easier to in the nicest possible was to keep your mouth shut as the person your saying these opinion’s to can effect them physically and mentally and maybe they are already going through a hard time and that the negative opinions dont help the situation and can sometimes make things worse sometimes its easier to keep the negative opinions to yourself and just be postive even if your not happy with the situation that is happening.

Critic review

On february 4th we had a group crit where the whole class had to go round in a circle showing everyone their sketch book and work that they have been doing and tell us about it. When I dicussed my work I talked about all the types of artwork I have been looking at and working with. This is one of the paintings I was working on while dicussing my work. A few people said they liked how it this painting inparticular was turing out and couldnt wait to see how it looked when it was finished i got some very good feed back from everyone and im pleased with the progress I have been making.

And this is the finished piece

As we were dicussing our work there where interesting things that people had been working with such as resins and wires and I found them very inspirational and also interesting and may try working with other types of materials in the future

Yorkshire sculpture park

On 2nd of october 2017 we went to the yorkshire scuplture park to have a look at the sculptures inside the museum and also outside, I took photos of the outside in the park because I really enjoyed these and thought that they looked different but also beautiful at the same time. This park was a very interesting place to vist but also gave alot of use inspiration towards our own artwork, it was an amazing experience and was worth the long coach journey there I would defintely recommend this to any artist or anyone who likes strange and wonderful sculptures or artwork to go to this gallery because it is definetly worth it. I feel that this is also a gallery that not only artists and beginning artists should see but everybody should go and see not only for inspiration but also just because it is worth seeing as it is a beautiful place to see there is a wide open space outside there are many places to walk around and see some weird and wonderful art but because while you are there their is some many other things to see even just for the view it is a beautiful view there is a lake and beautiful bridge going across the top and many other sites to see acroos the bridge and also on the otherside of the bridge were the sculptures stand and the building with artwork insde is a beautiful building in its self but the artwork inside it also very eyecatching and abstract and fits well where it is hung in the gallery unfortunatly I dont have any images of the artwork inside the building.

Introduction

twins.jpg
The aim of my blog is to be able to showcase my artwork to allow other people to see how I create my art work. This will also allow me to talk about my work, how my ideas come together and what I think of my work.
I am currently an art student in my second year studying a Foundation Degree in fine art at Queen Alexandra college where I have been studying art for the past four years. I am also juggling being a mum to twin girls whilst studying and being a student. I love drawing and painting but I am open to trying new ways of creating art. The styles of work I am currently interested in are pop art, tattoo styled work and zentangle.
The image above is a portrait of my twin daughters from when they were four days old. This is the very first portrait I had ever done and I am really pleased with the finished product
